Biography

Chopra was born in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand to Ashok Chopra and Madhu Akhauri, both physicians by profession. Chopra spent her childhood in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh; Newton, Massachusetts; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Her father was in the army and thus her family moved quite frequently. Her father hailed from a family of Punjabi origin, settled in Bareilly and her mother comes from a family settled in Jamshedpur. She also has a brother, Siddharth, who is seven years younger than she is. Chopra studied at La Martiniere Girls' School in Lucknow as a young girl. These frequent re-locations took place as her father was a physician in the Indian Army. She subsequently re-located to the U.S. where she studied in Newton South High School in Newton, Massachusetts and then in John F. Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She returned to India and did her high school at Army School in Bareilly. She began college at Jai Hind College in Mumbai but left after winning the Miss World pageant. Chopra came in second place at Femina Miss India 2000 competition winning the Femina Miss India World title and subsequently being sent to Miss World where she was crowned Miss World 2000. In the same year, Lara Dutta and Dia Mirza, both also from India, won the Miss Universe and Miss Asia Pacific crowns respectively, in a rare triple victory for one country. When Chopra won the Miss World crown, she became the fifth Indian woman to win the title, and the fourth Indian woman to win in a span of seven years. On December 12, 2009, Chopra was present as a judge for the Miss World 2009 competition held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Film career

Chopra made her debut in the 2002 Tamil film Thamizhan playing the role of Priya, the love interest of the protaginist in the film played by Vijay. The film was praised for its wit, although the depth of Chopra's character was seen as lacking. In 2003, she appeared in her first Bollywood film, opposite Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta in the Anil Sharma film The Hero: Love Story of a Spy. She played a supporting role as a doctor named Shaheen in a film The New York Times described as "ripping its text from the seething border tensions between India and Pakistan, spicing its conflict with hot-tempered religious zealots bent on nuclear havoc". Despite being one of the highest grossing films of that year, the overall film was not well received by critics, Chopra was awarded mostly good reviews for her debut Hindi performance. Later that year she appeared in Raj Kanwar's Andaaz, playing the character of Jiya who falls in love with Raj Malhotra, played by Akshay Kumar. The film was a considerable box office success, earning her a Filmfare Best Female Debut Award and a nomination for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. Rediff.com said of her role, "Priyanka clicks with the audience thanks to her skimpy outfits". Her next few films released in 2004 like Plan, Kismat and Asambhav performed poorly at the box office. Later that year she appeared in David Dhawan's romantic comedy Mujhse Shaadi Karogi playing the role of a young fashion designer Rani along with Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar, the film turned out to be the third highest grossing film of that year. She next starred in Aitraaz. It was her first negative role. Her performance won critical acclaim and earned a Filmfare Best Villain Award. She also received a second nomination for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for the role. In the same year, she participated in a world tour titled Temptations 2004 with other Bollywood actors, including Shahrukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta and Arjun Rampal. In 2005, she starred in Blackmail, Karam, Waqt: The Race Against Time, Yakeen, Barsaat and Bluffmaster, none of which performed well at the box office. In 2006, Chopra starred in two of the most successful films of the year - Krrish and Don - The Chase Begins Again. Then in 2007 she starred in Nikhil Advani's ensemble piece, Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love. The movie failed to do well at the box office. Chopra's next release, Big Brother also underperformed. In 2008, Chopra featured in six films. Her first four films, Love Story 2050, God Tussi Great Ho, Chamku and Drona, failed to do well. Chopra's fifth release of the year, Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion was a critical success. The film revolved around the fashion world and Chopra's role was that of an ambitious model. Her performance in the film was appreciated and earned her several awards for Best Actress including the Filmfare Best Actress Award. Music India Online said of her performance, "Her transformation from the bubbly Chandigarh girl to the super-ambitious supermodel, who dumps her boyfriend and conscience to pursue her dreams, is achieved with a gentle subtlety and bridled passion. This is Priyanka’s coming-of-age film. She looks like a zillion bucks. And acts like a woman who connects with the darkest, most desperate human emotions without wallowing in them." Chopra's final release of the year was Tarun Mansukhani's romantic comedy Dostana. The film was a moderate financial success. In 2009 she appeared in Vishal Bharadwaj's Kaminey alongside Shahid Kapoor playing a marathi girl named Sweety. Her performance in the film was described by critic Taran Adarsh: "Priyanka is first-rate. She's so much in sync with her character. Also, she gets the Maharashtrian accent perfect". She subsequently appeared in Ashutosh Gowariker's What's Your Raashee?, a film in which Chopra became the first actress in the world to portray 12 characters on screen. The film was a financial and critical failure. In early 2010, Chopra appeared in Jugal Hansraj's Pyaar Impossible where she portrayed the role of a college beauty who eventually falls in love with a geek. Chopra is currently working on Sajid Nadiadwala's Anjaana Anjaani and Vishal Bharadwaj's Saat Khoon Maaf in which she plays the role of a woman with seven husbands.

Personal Life:

She has been often linked up with the chocolate boy Shahid Kapoor. There love game started when she was working with Shahid Kapoor in Kaminey. Though there stock reply has always been "We are just good friends".  It's heard that currently they both are not in talking terms and has eventually broke up.

Priyanka Chopra Biography

Priyanka Chopra Biography :

Priyanka Chopra was born on the 18th of July, 1982 in Jamshedpur, Bihar. Her parents are doctors; her father Ashok Chopra was a doctor in the Indian Army and is an accomplished singer. Her father is a Punjabi, while her mother is from Bihar. Priyanka has a brother, Sidharth who is younger to her by 7 years. He recently graduated from his catering and hotel management course in Switzerland. Priyanka’s fraternal cousin Parineeta Chopra is another budding actor in Bollywood, who has already made her mark with her first two movies.

Since her father was in the army, Priyanka had to move around quite a bit during her formative years. She has studied in La Martiniere Girls’ School in Lucknow. She moved to US to study in the Newton North High School in Newton, Massachusetts and then in the John F. Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She moved back to India to complete her schooling from Army Public School in Bareilly. It was when she had applied to the Jai Hind College for her graduation studies that she got the call for the Miss India pageant and then there was no looking back.

She was a runner up at the Miss India competition along with Dia Mirza while Lara Dutta won the crown that year. Priyanka went on ahead to win the Miss World crown in 2000 despite a controversial answer to the last crucial question thrown by one of the judges. The other two girls too, won internationally in their respective categories.

Career:
Priyanka first entered the film industry from the South in the Tamil film Thamizan in 2002 with Tamil Superstar Vijay, which turned out to be moderately successful.
Priyanka Chopra Biography – In Thamizan

Her Bollywood debut was in the movie The Hero: Love Story of a Spy. This Anil Sharma directed movie had Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta in the lead roles. This movie was touted to be the most expensive Bollywood movie of that year.

Priyanka Chopra’s first big hit was Andaaz, which had fellow Miss India contestant Lara Dutta and Akshay Kumar. The role in this movie fetched her Filmfare Best Female Debut. And a star was born.

Unlike many new actresses, Priyanka took the risk of playing an adulterous scheming woman early in her career, in the 2004 Abbas- Mustan film Aitraaz. Her bold and sexy take of a vindictive and sexually manipulative woman got her the Filmfare Best Villain Award; only the second woman after Kajol to get an award for this category. Even with established stars like Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor in the movie, Priyanka managed to hold her own and even managed to garner more attention than the others.

Priyanka had a mixed innings at the box office for the next few years with hit movies such as David Dhawan’s comedy Mujhse Shaadi Karoge in 2004. 2004 also saw some of her flop movies like Plan and Asambhav being released and given thumbs down by critics and regular movie goers.

2005 saw the release of many Priyanka starrer films. Out of which only Waqt: The Race Against Time and Bluffmaster! were moderate successes. It was during the shooting of Bluffmaster! Priyanka acquired the nickname of ‘Piggy Chops’ from her co-stars  and which continues to follow her.

Krrish was a sci-fi movie that was directed by Rakesh Roshan and also had Hrithik Roshan in the lead role. This movie was a sequel to the super hit Koi… Mil Gaya.  This movie too, was loved by all. Farhan Akhtar’s Don in 2006 saw Priyanka in her action avatar wherein she did her own action stunts in the movie and looked good doing them. This movie was a big hit too.

2008 was great year for Priyanka Chopra only towards the fag end of that year. 2007 and the main part of 2008 had Priyanka delivering flops such as Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute to Love which had an ensemble cast, and the disastrous futuristic romantic film Love Story 2050. It was also the year when she finally established her credentials as a superb actress; her intensity as Meghna Mathur, small town girl who makes it big only to get lost in the big bad world of modeling, was appreciated by all in the Madhur Bhandarkar directed film Fashion and which fetched her the National Film Award for Best Actress and a Filmfare Award for Best Actress too. This year saw the release of the commercially successful romantic comedy film Dostana which had Priyanka playing the love interest of three men- Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Bobby Deol as well.

Priyanka’s deglamorised role of a middle class yet fiery Maharashtrian girl in the Vishal Bharadwaj film Kaminey in 2009 won her many admirers. The same year saw the release of another Priyanka starrer; the Ashutosh Gowarikar directed What’s Your Raashee? This movie had Priyanka essaying 12 different roles while Harman Baweja played the leading man. This record breaking feat of Priyanka didn’t impress the movie goers and most ignored it.

She became a television host with the action TV reality show Khatron Ke Khiladi  after  replacing the previous host and anchor, Akshay Kumar. 2010 also saw the release of Jugal Hansraj’s film Pyaar Impossible and Siddharth’s film Anjaana Anjaani which had Priyanka looking great but finding no takers in the audience.

Her depiction of a serial husband killer in Vishal Bharadwaj’s 7 Khoon Maaf  in 2011 was chillingly effective enough to fetch her Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. Though the film had mixed reviews, Priyanka’s work was appreciated.

2012 saw Priyanka reprise her action role as Roma in the Shahrukh Khan starrer and Farhan Akhtar directed film Don 2.  Agneepath ,a  Hrithik Roshan starrer and a tribute to the previous Amitabh Bachchan starrer of the same name, turned into a humongous hit which managed to hit the 100 crore bracket. The Kunal Kohli directed Teri Meri Kahaani was also released this year to a limp response from the public. This romantic drama which was actually a set of three love stories based in three different generations didn’t set the cash registers ringing.

Just like her father, Ashok Chopra, Priyanka Chopra is a singer, though unlike him she has trained as western classical singer. She now plans to launch her singing career with a bang. She has signed a worldwide recording agreement with Universal Music and Desi Hits to record and release her first music album. The songs in the album will be written by her and sung in English; it will have around ten pop songs and will release worldwide, sometime in 2012.

Personal Life:
Priyanka has managed to stay afloat even with some controversies linked with her. She was rumoured to be in a relationship with Akshay Kumar and her telephone bill was leaked to the media detailing phone calls between the two. She has not signed any film with him since the story broke out. She then had to deal with a vengeful secretary, Prakash Jaju who had been allegedly stalking and threatening her and the police had to be involved to deal with him. Priyanka’s cat fights with female stars like Kareena are a grist for the rumour mill. Recently her alleged closeness to Shahrukh Khan caused a lot of upheaval among the film industry denizens. She has also been liked with Harman Baweja, Shahid Kapoor among others. Priyanka is known for her professionalism and she has conducted herself in her profession with sincerity.

Personal Quotes
"I fail to understand why people would think I got a raw deal out of Krrish (2006), considering I was present all through the film, from the beginning till the end. And I don't know where people get off really. 'Krissh' has done a business of Rupees 150 crores. It's popular and is almost giving 'Superman' a run for its money, so what more convincing is required to get the point across? I'm very happy with the response I got fro the film. I'm happy with my role. I've learnt that you can't always please everyone in any case. And 'Krissh' is my moment of success; I will not allow anyone to take that away from me." (Stardust magazine, September 2006)
Once I knew I wasn't going to be doing Umrao Jaan (2006), I completely disconnected from the film. And I cannot compare myself to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
When I became Miss World, I couldn't believe I had won it. I used to sleep with my crown because I was scared someone would steal it. In a minute the world changed for me. (July 2007)
I'm lucky. I don't know whether I'm deserving or not. All I know is that I work damn hard for everything. And God helps those who help themselves. Every day is like an exam. I believe destiny and hard work go hand in hand. I was studying to be an engineer when my mom and my brother sent my pictures for the Miss India contest. I didn't even know about it. If that isn't destiny, what is? (July 2007)
Most outsiders look at the film world as something glamorous. But no one sees the hard work that goes into it. I haven't taken a holiday in the last four years. I'm working 25 hours a day. There's no time to sleep or to eat. (July 2007)
When asked what sets her apart from other actresses: "I don't come from a film background. I haven't learned anything about films or film-making. But I have a thirst to know everything about my profession. I want to learn about cinematography, about editing, about music recordings, about post-production. So when people in the know talk, I willingly listen. Also, I'm not scared of working 20 hours a day."
I got into the movies by accident. When I got an offer, I thought let's try this too. Everything in my life has happened by trial and error. I didn't even think I would win the Miss India title so where's the question of thinking I'd come this far. (July 2007)
I thoroughly believe in the institution of marriage, but there's still a long way to go before I get married. Right now I want to concentrate on my career.
I adore watching movies; movie marathons are my favorite pastime. I can watch up to five movies back to back. I also love music and like reading whenever I get the time.
